Xcimer Energy leverages decades of research on Inertial Fusion Energy (IFE) combined with groundbreaking new laser architecture. Our mission is to deploy fusion power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. Xcimer has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by leading investors, Xcimer is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change. Join us in powering a better world with inertial fusion!
As a Senior Facilities and Pulsed Power Mechanical Engineer, you will lead the mechanical design of pulsed power systems and facility modifications integral to the excimer laser systems driving IFE power generation. Your work will begin with prototype development and extend to designing and demonstrating power-producing IFE reactors. We are looking for our engineers to apply their technical expertise, problem solving skills, and dedication to quality to positively impact the future of energy!

Responsibilities

  • Design and layout Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) systems for complex facilities.
  • Develop and integrate high-voltage mechanical designs for pulsed power systems.
  • Manage pressure and vacuum vessel certifications and over-tests per prevailing code standards.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including mechanical, laser, pulsed power, and optical engineers.
  • Lead the mechanical design of prototypes and subsystems from preliminary to final design phases.
  • Oversee and assist with assembly performed by interdisciplinary technicians.
  • Conduct system shakedown, testing, and ongoing operation support.
  • Scale designs to meet the requirements of power-producing IFE reactors.
  • Contribute to concept studies for IFE reactor applications and related technologies.

Qualifications

  • Education: B.S. in Mechanical, Nuclear, Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent work experience in facilities engineering.
  • Experience: 8+ years of experience in: Facilities engineering, including MEP, HVAC, and utilities (e.g., compressed dry air, chilled water, oil systems) OR Mechanical design for pulsed power or high-voltage systems.
  • Proven ability to manage complex construction or renovation projects, including contractor oversight, budgeting, and scheduling.
  • Strong understanding of electrical systems, including load balancing, fault detection, and optimization. Exposure to high-voltage pulsed power systems is a plus.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred).
  • Experience with integrated systems (e.g., pulsed power, lasers, opto-mechanics, aerospace, defense).
  • This position involves access to technology that is subject to U.S. export controls and therefore requires being approved for all export control authorizations required by law.

Desired

  • Licensed Professional Engineer (LPE) or equivalent credentials preferred.
  • Startup experience preferred.
Xcimer Energy Corporation is a startup pursuing commercial energy production from inertial fusion, using the same fundamental physics recently proven by the NIF (National Ignition Facility) and made economically viable by Xcimer’s novel, low-cost laser architecture. Xcimer was founded in 2021 by a team of experts in high-energy laser systems, nuclear physics and fusion engineering, and has received backing from leading clean energy and deep-tech investors. Xcimer’s comprehensive, integrated design for a power plant has been analyzed and reviewed by independent experts and represents the most assured path to put fusion energy on the grid within 10 years. Xcimer is currently finalizing plans for construction of a prototype, multi-kJ laser facility to demonstrate critical aspects of the Xcimer laser architecture.
Xcimer was recently selected by the U.S. Department of Energy for federal funding under the Milestone-Based Fusion Development Program. Selection was highly competitive and merit driven, with Xcimer receiving the second-largest federal award after Commonwealth Fusion Systems.
