Xcimer Energy leverages decades of research on Inertial Fusion Energy (IFE) combined with groundbreaking new laser architecture. Our mission is to deploy fusion power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. Xcimer has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by leading investors, Xcimer is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change. Join us in powering a better world with inertial fusion!
As a Fluid Systems Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible for the mechanical and fluid system design, analysis, component specification, and integration for high energy lasers and subsystems being developed for IFE power generation; initially for Xcimer prototype systems, and continuing through the design and demonstration of a power-producing IFE reactor. We are looking for our engineers to apply their technical expertise, problem solving skills, and dedication to quality to positively impact the future of energy!

Responsibilities

  • Design, analyze, and specify components for mechanical and fluid systems used in high-energy laser prototypes and IFE reactors.
  • Perform fluid dynamics and heat transfer calculations, including sizing and thermal analysis for heat exchangers.
  • Develop detailed 3D models using CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) and conduct Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
  • Create precise engineering drawings with GD&T for manufacturing and assembly.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including mechanical, laser, and optical engineers, to develop and refine system designs.
  • Lead the design and integration of prototype systems and subsystems through Preliminary and Final Design phases.
  • Support assembly, shakedown, testing, and ongoing operation of prototype systems.
  • Participate in scaling up laser amplifiers to support the design of a power-producing IFE reactor.
  • Contribute to concept studies for integrating laser systems into IFE reactors and exploring other potential applications.

Qualifications

  • Education: B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience: 3+ years of experience in fluid system design, analysis, and component specification.
  • Strong foundation in fluid dynamics and heat transfer principles.
  • Experience with heat exchanger design and thermal calculations.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred) and Finite Element Analysis tools.
  • Skilled in creating detailed engineering drawings with GD&T.
  • Experience with complex, integrated systems (e.g., pulsed power, laser systems, opto-mechanical systems, fusion energy, aerospace, or defense).
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration experience is a plus.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee of granted asylum.

Desired

  • Experience working with high energy laser systems.
  • Startup experience preferred.
