Xcimer Energy leverages decades of research on Inertial Fusion Energy (IFE) combined with groundbreaking new laser architecture. Our mission is to deploy fusion power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. Xcimer has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by leading investors, Xcimer is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate
change. Join us in powering a better world with inertial fusion!
As an Optical Control Systems Engineer you will apply your skills to help us build a state-of-the-art UV laser systems for nuclear fusion. We are a small, dynamic, and highly motivated team focused on the most plausible path to bringing fusion to the grid. You will have the opportunity to apply broad electrical engineering skills and technical leadership to complex problems. You will directly contribute to the design of active beam control systems for high energy lasers and the industrial automation
and controls for our new facility. We are looking for our engineers to apply their technical expertise, problem solving skills, and dedication to quality to positively impact the future of energy!

Responsibilities

  • Your role will be concentrated on designing an overall control systems architecture to control deep UV high energy laser beam alignment, pointing and wavefront to target, as well as all the industrial controls for our state of the art laser development facility.
  • You will work closely with the optical engineering, mechanical, and software teams to facilitate operation, beam control and steering, and diagnostics using numerous electro-optical subsystems and component-level devices.
  • You will be responsible for innovative approaches and implementation of architectures for pointing control subsystems (slow/fast steering mirrors and tracking sensors), adaptive optics subsystems (deformable mirrors and wavefront sensors), and diagnostic subsystems (alignment recovery hardware, power meters, beam characterization sensors, laser trackers, etc).

Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in electrical engineering, or related field
  • 5+ years experience in electrical/control systems, controls design, development and implementation in an industrial, production or manufacturing environment
  • Deep understanding of controls theory, mechanical and electrical systems, and industrial systems
  • Understanding of electrical diagrams, control diagrams, building operations and control circuits
  • PLC code development
  • Fluent in controls systems-based software
  • Experience with designing Graphical User Interfaces
  • Experience with developing and maintaining an overall controls system architecture
  • Experience with designing, tuning, and maintaining closed loop systems
  • Experience with adaptive optics systems including deformable mirrors and wavefront sensors
  • Experience with precision level timing sequence development and automation
  • Experience with sensors and sensor control integration
  • Experience with data acquisition and presentation
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee of granted asylum

Desired

  • M.S. or PhD in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • Direct electro-optical controls systems engineering experience
  • MATLAB - Simulink experience
  • Experience with developing and maintaining an overall controls system architecture comprised of multiple electro-optical subsystem
  • Experience in high energy optical systems working in the deep UV range
  • Experience with closed loop systems using fast steering mirrors, tracking sensors, and tracking algorithms/filters to maintain precision level pointing accuracy in the presence of multiple external jitter sources
  • Experience with adaptive optics systems including deformable mirrors and wavefront sensors
  • Experience with precision level timing sequence development and automation of electro-optical components
