About Voltus:
Voltus is a leading DER technology platform and virtual power plant operator connecting distributed energy resources to electricity markets in order to deliver less expensive, more reliable, and more sustainable electricity. We help commercial and industrial customers and DER partners generate cash by maximizing the value of their flexible load, distributed generation, energy storage, energy efficiency, and electric vehicle resources in energy markets. We hire teammates who are bright, gritty, and good; who have a genuine passion for delivering a cleaner energy future; and who enjoy working in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
The Role:
Voltus is seeking a skilled and strategic Regulatory Compliance Counsel to join our Legal and Compliance team. This counsel will ensure Voltus and its platform remain compliant with FERC, public utility commissions, and applicable utility and grid operator requirements. You’ll provide expert legal guidance, support regulatory advocacy, and partner cross-functionally to mitigate legal risks with precision and clarity. If you’re a JD-qualified attorney with 5+ years in regulatory or utility compliance, a strong communications skillset, and a passion for clean energy, we’d love to meet you.
Voltus is a fully distributed company and this job is remote. You have the flexibility to work from anywhere in the US or Canada, but your workday must align with a US-based time zone.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide in-depth legal advice and analysis on FERC rules, utility regulations, and other relevant Regional Transmission Organization and operator requirements.
  • Draft, review, and refine compliance policies, procedures, and guidance documents that maintain Voltus’s adherence to federal and state regulations.
  • Support Voltus’s regulatory work: conduct legal research and draft filings.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Energy Markets, Product, Operations, Regulatory Affairs, and Finance, to embed compliance considerations into business processes and initiatives.
  • Monitor and assess the impact of regulatory developments and tariff changes on compliance, prepare internal updates, and advise leadership on actionable impacts and strategies.
  • Partner with external counsel, as needed, to bolster Voltus’s compliance posture and regulatory responses.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and active membership in good standing with at least one U.S. state bar.
  • Minimum of 5 years of legal experience in energy, regulatory, utility compliance, or related fields.
  • Direct experience working with FERC, utility regulation, and/or ISO/RTO market rules strongly preferred. Experience with Market Based Rate requirements and FERC’s e-filing system is a strong plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret complex regulatory frameworks and articulate them in clear, actionable terms.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with proven ability to draft policy narratives, legal memos, and presentations for internal and external audiences.
  • Track record of working strategically and collaboratively in fast-moving, entrepreneurial environments.
  • Very strong attention to detail, self-initiation, and a drive for problem-solving with both rigor and adaptability.
Please note that at this time, we do not sponsor visas or transfers for new hires. Voltus teammates need to be authorized to work from their home location (in the US or Canada, unless otherwise indicated on the role description).
Additionally, while Voltus is an all-remote workplace, we have limitations on where employees are able to work for regulatory and security reasons. We expect that Voltans are working primarily from their home country. Working while traveling to other countries must be approved as per our Global Remote Travel Policy.
At Voltus, we are proud to be an equal opportunity employer because we recognize that a diverse organization begins with a diverse candidate pool. This means we do not tolerate discrimination of any kind and are committed to providing equal employment opportunities regardless of your gender identity, race, nationality, religion, age, sexual orientation, veteran status, disability status, or marital status.
