About Thea Energy:
Thea Energy is leveraging recent breakthroughs in stellarator physics and engineering to create a faster and simpler approach to commercializing fusion energy. The company is reinventing the stellarator using computer-controlled arrays of planar coils thereby replacing the intricate, complex modular magnets required in all other stellarator architectures. Thea Energy is on a mission to create a limitless source of zero emission energy for a sustainable future.
Position Overview:
Thea Energy is seeking experienced, highly motivated engineers with cryogenics and vacuum experience to join its rapidly growing team. The cryogenics and vacuum engineer will develop and integrate critical cryogenic infrastructure for the testing of Thea Energy’s high temperature superconducting (“HTS”) magnets. This role will support key prototyping milestones, and use this experience to inform future cryogenic infrastructure and interfaces for planar coil stellarator HTS magnets. HTS magnets are foundational components of Thea Energy’s planar coil stellarator, making compact, simpler, and lower-cost fusion systems possible. As part of a rapidly growing team, you’ll be part of the organizational build-up of a leading fusion energy company. These roles will have a high degree of autonomy and must be able to move quickly. The Thea Energy team is self-motivated, creative, and fun individuals with an excitement for solving complex problems.
Key Responsibility Areas:
- Design, procure, and integrate critical cryogenic infrastructure for the rapid development of HTS magnets
- Develop performance specifications for cryogenic cooling systems, including conductive and helium-cooled systems
- Develop FEA thermal simulations to validate critical design decisions and performance expectations
- Specify, procure, and integrate vacuum systems, including vacuum vessels, pumping equipment, and instrumentation
- Incorporate design for manufacturing principles and support first builds
- Produce design specifications and collaborate with vendors to get quotes and deliver hardware that meets qualifications
- Support the implementation of tooling and manufacturing
- Plan for and execute integrated cryogenic magnet systems testing
- Track and report results and progress against program goals and milestones
- Communicate and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders
Required Experience & Skillsets
- Experience working with cryocooler-based or helium circulation cryogenic systems
- Experience working with vacuum equipment, plumbing and flanges, components, and instrumentation
- Experience in mechanical design using CAD software (e.g.Solidworks, CATIA, NX, etc.)
- Ability to work through and solve highly complex engineering problems
- Ability to take initiative, work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to execute and flourish in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment
Ideal Experience & Skillsets:
- Experience specifying, installing, and troubleshooting cryocooler-based and helium circulation cryogenic systems
- Experience specifying, installing, and troubleshooting vacuum systems, including vacuum vessels or cryostats, turbomolecular machinery, roughing pumps, and vacuum instrumentation
- Experience developing manufacturing drawings for vacuum chambers and equipment, including weldments, surface finishes, and GD&T
- Experience developing steady state and transient thermal simulations with Ansys and/or COMSOL
- Comfortable working to aggressive deadlines
- Exceptional work ethic
- Strong team member with clear communication and collaboration skills
- Innate desire to learn, innovate, and critique ideas including one’s own
- At least a bachelor’s degree in physics, mechanical engineers, electrical engineering, materials engineering, or related fields
- Experience with magnetic confinement fusion, aerospace, medical devices, or other highly technical industries is ideal
Company Benefits:
- Competitive salary
- Comprehensive health benefits (e.g. medical/dental/vision)
- Employee equity stock options
- Open vacation policies
- Work-life balance
It’s not necessary to meet all of the skillsets outlined above. Please feel free to send us a note and tell us why you would still be a great fit for this role or Thea Energy.
