Note: This position requires approximately 40% travel to customer sites and manufacturing facilities to support project implementation, commissioning, troubleshooting, training, and ongoing technical support.

Position Summary

As a Controls Engineer, you will play a key role in the design, development, implementation, and support of industrial automation and control systems. You will collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams, customers, and field personnel to deliver reliable automation solutions that improve manufacturing processes, system performance, and operational efficiency. This role provides opportunities to work on projects from concept through commissioning while supporting continuous improvement initiatives and emerging technologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, interpret, and maintain electrical schematics, control panel layouts, mechanical drawings, wiring diagrams, and bills of materials using CAD software.
  • Design, develop, program, test, troubleshoot, and optimize PLC, HMI, SCADA, and industrial control system applications for new and existing equipment.
  • Modify, update, and maintain legacy control systems while ensuring compatibility with current standards and customer requirements.
  • Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, operations, digitalization, and project management teams to define system requirements, develop technical solutions, and successfully execute automation projects.
  • Support equipment assembly and integration by working closely with technicians and production personnel to verify build quality, resolve technical issues, and ensure compliance with design specifications.
  • Commission, start up, validate, and optimize equipment at manufacturing facilities and customer sites.
  • Diagnose electrical, controls, communication, and automation issues and implement effective corrective actions to minimize downtime.
  • Research, evaluate, and specify automation hardware, electrical components, sensors, instrumentation, networking equipment, and control devices.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation including user manuals, operating procedures, software management plans, commissioning documentation, and engineering change records.
  • Participate in project planning activities including estimating, budgeting, scheduling, design reviews, and risk assessments.
  • Provide technical support throughout equipment installation, startup, production launch, warranty, and ongoing operational phases.
  • Assist with continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities to enhance system reliability, productivity, safety, and maintainability.
  • Ensure designs and implementations comply with applicable safety standards, electrical codes, and company engineering practices.
  • Travel to customer locations and manufacturing facilities to support installations, commissioning, troubleshooting, training, and field service activities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • One to three years of engineering experience in industrial automation, manufacturing, controls engineering, or a related field.
  • Proficiency with CAD software for creating and modifying electrical and mechanical drawings.
  • Experience programming and troubleshooting PLCs, HMIs, and industrial control systems.
  • Working knowledge of industrial communication protocols and automation architectures.
  • Experience with Allen-Bradley/Rockwell Automation platforms is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Visual Basic, VB.NET, Python, or other programming languages is considered a plus.
  • Basic understanding of robotics and automated manufacturing systems; experience with ABB robotic systems is preferred.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize competing responsibilities, and work independently as well as within a team.
  • Willingness and ability to travel approximately 40% as required to support customer and project needs.
