Position Summary

The Industrial Controls Engineer is responsible for the design, programming, implementation, and support of industrial automation and control systems. This role develops PLC/HMI/SCADA systems, supports commissioning efforts, and works cross-functionally with operations, maintenance, and project teams to improve reliability, efficiency, and safety.

The ideal candidate has strong hands-on PLC programming experience, understands industrial electrical systems, and thrives in a production-focused environment.

Key Responsibilities

Controls Design & Programming

  • Design and develop PLC programs from scratch for industrial equipment and processes
  • Configure and program HMIs and SCADA systems
  • Develop control narratives and functional specifications
  • Design and review electrical schematics, panel layouts, and I/O lists
  • Ensure compliance with applicable safety and electrical codes

Commissioning & Startup

  • Lead or support system commissioning and equipment startup
  • Perform I/O checks and validation testing
  • Troubleshoot and debug PLC and automation systems during installation
  • Provide technical support during production ramp-up

Troubleshooting & Continuous Improvement

  • Diagnose and resolve controls-related issues in production environments
  • Optimize machine performance, cycle times, and system reliability
  • Support root cause analysis (RCA) for automation failures
  • Implement system upgrades and process improvements

Documentation & Collaboration

  • Maintain accurate program backups and revision control
  • Create and update technical documentation
  • Collaborate with maintenance, operations, and project management teams
  • Train technicians and operators on controls systems

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or related field preferred
  • Associate’s degree with strong relevant experience considered

Experience

  • 3+ years of industrial automation or controls engineering experience
  • Experience in manufacturing, heavy industrial, or process environments

Technical Skills

  • PLC Programming (Allen-Bradley / Rockwell preferred; Siemens a plus)
  • HMI & SCADA systems
  • Industrial networking (EtherNet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, etc.)
  • VFDs and motor controls
  • 480V industrial electrical systems
  • Control panel design and schematic interpretation
  • Safety circuits and machine safeguarding

Preferred Experience

  • Motion control and servo systems
  • Robotics integration
  • Vision systems
  • UL508A or NFPA familiarity
  • AutoCAD Electrical or EPLAN
