QuantumScape is on a mission to transform energy storage with solid-state lithium-metal battery technology. The company’s next-generation batteries are designed to enable greater energy density, faster charging and enhanced safety to support the transition away from legacy energy sources toward a lower carbon future.

About the team: Manufacturing Quality is a diverse group of engineers and data scientists who bring deep expertise in materials science, electrochemistry, statistics, and machine learning. Our team thrives on data-driven decision-making and a shared commitment to drive continuous improvement to QuantumScape’s solid-state battery technology. We work closely with the Manufacturing, Reliability, and R&D, groups to identify failure modes, engineer critical-to-quality specifications, and implement robust control strategies across all process areas.

What we need: We are seeking a Principal Process Quality Engineer with extensive industry experience in Process Quality. In this role, you will lead key initiatives to implement SPC, improve Ppk / Cpk, and reduce defectivity across manufacturing processes at QuantumScape.

The ideal candidate has a strong background in statistical analysis, a proven track record with complex data analysis, and thrives in a highly collaborative, fast-paced environment. If you enjoy problem-solving and want to build a system from the ground up, we’d like to hear from you.

What You’ll do:

  • Design and manage quality control plans for each process step across separator, cathode, and cell manufacturing lines.
  • Enforce statistical process control (SPC) requirements. Collaborate with process owners to monitor control charts, document out of control action plans (OCAPs), review Cp/Cok, etc.
  • Lead DFMEA and PFMEA, highlighting the highest risk of failure for the design and/or process using an RPN scale.
  • Participate in Change Control reviews to ensure that the critical process parameter changes are defined, characterized, and controlled.
  • Leverage DOE and statistical analysis to formalize sampling protocol for go no-go testing
  • Use Python and other analytical tools to collect, clean, and analyze large data sets to identify trends, root causes, and improvement opportunities.
  • Mentor junior engineers and quality team members on analytical techniques, process quality methods, and problem-solving frameworks.
  • Champion data-driven decision-making and statistical rigor in all quality processes.

Skills You’ll Need:

  • Deep knowledge of quality tools and methodologies (Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, DOE, SPC, root cause analysis).
  • Strong analytical and statistical skills; proficiency with SQL, Minitab, or JMP is a plus.
  • Experience with Python for data analysis, automation, and visualization (pandas, numpy, matplotlib, seaborn, etc.).
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and leadership skills, with a track record of influencing cross-functional teams.
  • Proven ability to work in fast-paced, data-driven manufacturing environments.
  • 8+ years of experience in a manufacturing quality or process engineering role, with at least 3 years in a senior or principal-level position.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, or related discipline); advanced degree preferred.

Nice to have:

  • Fundamental understanding of battery electrochemistries and failure mechanisms. Familiarity of electrical test and metrics.
  • Certified with Six Sigma, Certified Manager of Quality, Certified Quality Engineer (CQE), or Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE).

Physical requirements:

  • Work is performed in a dry room, fume hood, lab area, or glovebox requiring the use of fine motor skills
  • Sitting or standing for extended periods of time
  • Reaching and twisting motions with hands
  • Lifting up to 25 lbs.

ONSITE: This position is required to work onsite 4-5 days per week to meet the minimum essential duties and requirements of this position. As an on-site R&D and manufacturing operations organization, in-person face to face interaction is essential to building authentic relationships, trust, teamwork, and collaboration.

Compensation & Benefits: Expected salary range for this role is from $ 119,000 to $181,550, and a final salary will be determined by the candidate's experience and educational background. QuantumScape also offers an annual bonus and a generous RSU/Equity package as part of its compensation plan. In addition, we do offer a tremendous benefits plan including employee paid health care, Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP), and other benefits.
